Should we say it Qasr-e-Shireen or a second home to desi mithai lovers? Located amidst the famous Neela Gumbad market in Anarkali Lahore, Qasr-e-Shireen is known to many due to its exceptional range of local delicacies. People come from far-off areas to Qasr-e-Shirin due to their signature mithai-making style and unbeatable taste. Established in 1953 (definitely an oldie but goldie) this is the best place to be if you’re looking for authentic, desi sweets in Lahore.
Team PFP went to Qasr-e-Shireen, eager to explore the diverse taste the mithai spot has to offer. Soon after entering there, we couldn’t resist inquiring about their history from one of their owners. We learned about their Delhi roots and about how this is the 4th generation taking care of Qasr-e-Shireen after nearly 6 decades of service.
After this interesting Q&A session, we went further to see the variety of sweets they had to offer and to our surprise, they had quite a lot in the store. While seeing the whole sweet section we tasted their best sellers, including Zafrani Kalakand and Milk Cake. Their workers were kind enough to guide us through the whole tasting which was a smooth, and deliciously sweet experience.
We were offered, in the generous Lahori style, to come and see the place where the mithai was being made, and Oh Boy! The desi ghee aroma and the sight of motichoors had our mouths watering instantly. We asked about the authentic and iconic taste of the bakery, the workers told us that they’ve been making these sweets with the same traditional recipe, handed down by their ancestors for almost 70 years now.
The sweets we got to taste over there were definitely worth the hype. Each mithai was fresh, unique and featured the distinctly balanced flavors of pure desi ghee and sugar. Their Milk Cake literally had us drooling. Interestingly enough, this little piece from heaven included milk, sugar, and a hint of cardamom, with aloe vera, tree sap, and their in-house organic desi ghee which makes this delicacy to have a rich and creamy texture that melts in your mouth.
What sets Qasr e Shireen’s Milk Cake apart from others is its authentic flavor and texture. The milk is boiled for hours to achieve the perfect consistency, and the sugar is caramelized to give it a distinct taste. Qasr-e-Shireen’s Milk Cake is one of their most famous and beloved sweets.
So the billing is done after weighing the sweet that you get from here. Since we got 200 gm, hence our bill came out to only Rs. 240 which was actually quite economical given the taste and quality they had to offer.
This whole experience at Qasr-e-Shireen was a blessing we didn’t know our sweet tooth’s needed. From the taste to the quality and overall value of money, everything was worth it! Some places are iconic for a reason, and at Qasr-e-Shireen that reason is a distinct connection to our traditional roots which is obvious in every single bite of their mithai!
If you’re looking for a refreshing drink to wash down all the sweets, we highly recommend checking out Hafiz Juice Corner, our latest blog post feature.
